Sam Low: A Hawaiian Yankee

In 1921, a young Sandy Low was sent away from his home in Kohala to attend school in Connecticut. He never returned to Hawaii. But he gave his aloha spirit, his appreciation of Hawaiian music, and most importantly, his love of the sea, to his son, Sam Low, who was raised in Connecticut. Sam Low took all that his father had given him, and brought it to his father's birthplace: Hawaii.

Sam Low: Raising Islands

Raising Islands is a term that Hokulea canoe voyagers use to describe chicken-skin moments during a long sea journey when islands appear to rise out of the distant horizon. It's also the name of the second part of my conversation with Sam Low on Long Story Short. The Connecticut-raised, part-Hawaiian voyager recalls learning and discerning the fears and dreams of his cousin, master navigator Nainoa Thompson, and others as they crewed the Hokulea.
