This special edition features stories from the 2019 HIKI NŌ Winter Challenge. On February 1, 2019, 12 participating middle school teams and nine participating high school teams were given four days to complete a HIKI NŌ story based on the Hawaiian value of kuleana (to take responsibility). Teachers could not provide hands-on help.

The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court oversees licensed attorneys in our state and establishes rules governing duties, fairness, communication, truthfulness and respect. The rules state that in Hawaiʻi a lawyer is “a public citizen having special responsibility for the quality of justice” – and there are consequences for attorneys who violate those rules.

Maui County Council woman Elle Cochran and former councilman Mike Victorino emerged as the top two candidates from an eight-person primary.

Three candidates are trying to unseat our incumbent Democratic Governor on November’s general election ballot. Gov. David Ige declined our invitation to participate in a live candidate forum on INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI; his three opponents accepted.

This week’s INSIGHTS features candidates in the five-way race for U.S. House District 1, covering urban Honolulu to Kapolei and Mililani. Former Congressman Ed Case beat six competitors to win the Democratic nomination, while former state lawmaker Cam Cavasso beat his lone competitor to win the Republican nomination.

The next INSIGHTS presents two discussions:   –From 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm, we’ll talk about a Constitutional Convention and how it works. Hawai‘i’s last one was 40 years ago. This November, voters will decide whether to hold another one.
