The Life & Science of Dr. Marian Diamond

 

This film follows the late Dr. Marian Diamond, one of the founders of modern neuroscience, over a five-year period and highlights her scientific accomplishments. Her groundbreaking work was all the more remarkable because it began during an era when so few women entered science at all. Shouted at from the back of the conference hall by noteworthy male academics as she presented her research, and disparaged in the scientific journals of a more conservative era, Dr. Diamond simply did the work and followed where her curiosity led her.

 

Itʻs “Just” Anxiety

 

This revealing documentary introduces a dozen people from diverse backgrounds who describe their personal struggles with this mental health condition. The film follows individuals with anxiety symptoms ranging from excessive worry and fear to more extreme manifestations such as compulsive behavior and torturous panic attacks.

Michael and James explore how the chemicals in our food feed and build our bodies. The world is full of different cuisines and thousands of different meals. Yet when they’re reduced to their essence, there are actually just a handful of ingredients that our bodies absolutely need from our food to survive. These essential molecules come in a series of familiar sounding groups – carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals – but Michael and James discover plenty of surprises as they seek to understand exactly why each class of molecule is so important for the way our bodies work.

Rat Lungworm: What You Need to Know. What You Need to Do.

 

Rat lungworm, a parasite that causes a type of meningitis, has been behind at least 15 reported cases of the rare disease so far this year in Hawai‘i. By comparison, 11 cases were reported last year. Scientists and medical doctors say there have probably been more infections, but milder symptoms are difficult to differentiate from the flu or intestinal virus.

 

Experts say there are indicators that suggest that not only will more people become infected, but the illness will be more severe, as well, potentially leaving permanent nerve damage. What do they know – and what do they not know? How can you lower your risk? Several of the state’s leading experts on rat lungworm will be taking your questions.
