GREAT PERFORMANCES presents the London West End revival of Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim’s musical based on the memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) stars as Momma Rose, and Lara Pulver (Sherlock) portrays daughter Louise.

From his roots as an activist and poet to his indelible mark on Broadway, this program captures the legacy of the man some call America’s Shakespeare. Film and theater luminaries such as James Earl Jones, Viola Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Laurence Fishburne, Charles Dutton and others share their stories of the career and experience of bringing Wilson’s rich theatrical voice to the stage. This film tells of his journey to the Great White Way, the triumphs and struggles along the path to such seminal works as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson and others before his death in 2005.

From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, The Ed Sullivan Show, based in the heart of New York’s theatre district, presented live special performances by cast members from the most beloved stage musicals of Broadway’s golden age. Not seen for decades since their original broadcasts, these rare selections include performances by legends Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, Gwen Verdon, Dick Van Dyke, Richard Burton and others in songs from classics such as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweet Charity and Camelot. The special is hosted by Shirley Jones.

Performers include Kate Baldwin, Heidi Blickenstaff, James Clow, Norm Lewis, Julia Murney and Matthew Scott.

The angelic Jackie Evancho presents songs from her album, Awakening. Drawn from the best-known pieces from the classical canon, along with uplifting sacred music, Broadway tunes and pop songs, Jackie’s astoundingly beautiful young voice soars in the magnificent setting of Longwood Gardens Open Air Theatre, nestled among more than 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows in Brandywine Creek Valley in Pennsylvania, the singer’s home state. Broadway star Cheyenne Jackson joins Jackie on a number of duets, including “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera. Other songs include: “The Rains of Castamere” (theme from Game of Thrones), “Nessun Dorma,” and “With or Without You.”

Enjoy a new production of Rossini’s opera, based on the work by Sir Walter Scott. Joyce DiDonato sings the title role of Elena, the lady of the lake, with Juan Diego Flórez in the role of Giacomo, the benevolent king of Scotland. The opera also features Daniela Barcellona, John Osborn and Oren Gradus. Michele Mariotti conducts.

Few have captured the magic of the theatre better than Moss Hart. A poor kid from the Bronx who went on to become the writer of classic comedies with George S. Kaufman, including You Can’t Take it With You and The Man Who Came To Dinner. He also directed the original production of My Fair Lady.

 

Moss’s memoir Act One has captivated theater lovers for over 50 years. Director James Lapine has fittingly re-imagined this memoir for the stage, creating a world as vivid and transformative as the stage itself. The show features a first-rate cast led by Tony Shalhoub, Andrea Martin and Santino Fontana.

Kern & Hammerstein’s Show Boat

 

This groundbreaking musical redefined entertainment and changed the face of American theater. Spanning the years from 1880 to 1927, Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s lyrical masterpiece concerns the lives, loves and heartbreaks of three generations of show folk on the Mississippi River, in Chicago and on Broadway. The musical’s impact remains unparalleled, addressing racial prejudice, and introduced a bi-racial cast to Broadway at its premiere while also pointing the way toward a new synthesis between music and spectacle. This New York Philharmonic production features an all-star cast led by Vanessa Williams and Downton Abbey’s Julian Ovenden, with Norm Lewis, Jane Alexander, Fred Willard and Lauren Worsham. The Philharmonic’s full sound highlights the lush musical score at the center of this epic show.
