The Best of the Boston Pops

 

This musical special features some of the greatest moments from the world- renowned orchestra’s 129-year history. Hosted by Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, the program tells the orchestra’s story – from its beginning as summertime entertainment for Bostonians to its role as a national icon and beloved institution.

 

Showcasing the extraordinary variety of artists and performances from the leadership eras of Arthur Fiedler (1930-79), John Williams (1980-1993) and Keith Lockhart (1995 to present), this special program includes interviews and/or performances by Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Josh Groban, James Taylor, Vanessa Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis and Roberta Flack, among others. The program also features footage of legendary singers and musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Cash, Benny Goodman and Sammy Davis, Jr., along with performances by Broadway stars Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Nathan Lane and Jerry Herman.

 

 

JFK: The Lost Inaugural Gala

 

This look at the 1961 gala event celebrating President John F. Kennedy’s election features performances by Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman, Harry Belafonte, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Gene Kelly and more. Because of a blizzard the night of the event, the program could not be broadcast on NBC as planned. Actress Phylicia Rashad hosts this presentation.

From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, The Ed Sullivan Show, based in the heart of New York’s theatre district, presented live special performances by cast members from the most beloved stage musicals of Broadway’s golden age. Not seen for decades since their original broadcasts, these rare selections include performances by legends Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, Gwen Verdon, Dick Van Dyke, Richard Burton and others in songs from classics such as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweet Charity and Camelot. The special is hosted by Shirley Jones.
