Hosted by actor James Pickens, Jr, THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION CONCERT WITH THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA features the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by music director Franz Welser-Most. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, the performance includes classical selections by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Verdi as well as hymns and spirituals including “Down by the Riverside,” “Precious Lord,” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The Cleveland Orchestra is considered one of the world’s most highly regarded music ensembles. Led by music director Franz Welser-Möst, it will offer two concert performances of Richard Strauss’s “Daphne” on July 15th and 18th at Avery Fisher Hall. It will also perform two additional programs, featuring works by Messiaen, Dvorák, Beethoven, and Strauss, on July 16th and 17th at the same venue.

Opera Reimagined: Animating the Cunning Little Vixen

 

In 2014, The Cleveland Orchestra staged a unique production of Leoš Janáĉek’s The Cunning Little Vixen that blended traditional opera with technology and animation. OPERA REIMAGINED: ANIMATING THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN follows the journey of this innovative approach to opera from conception to tech rehearsals and, finally, to opening night. Through rehearsal footage, production meetings, and interviews with director Yuval Sharon, Cleveland Orchestra music director Franz Welser-Möst, animators at Walter Robot, and others, the half-hour documentary reveals how the opera comes together piece-by-piece, providing a fascinating view of all the creative elements featured in this unique performance.
