Earlier this year, the Hawai‘i State Archives received
two historic collections of records. One of the
collections was from long-time radio personality and
host of Territorial Airwaves, Harry B. Soria Jr. The other collection was from an Englishman who
resided in Toronto, Canada named Michael Scott. In all, the collections equal roughly 20,000 records,
with the earliest dating back to 1905. Contained within
these priceless vinyl artifacts is much of the history
of Hawaiian recorded music.
Composer and slack key guitar master Keola Beamer evokes the richness of Hawaii's music and dance traditions in stories that touch both heart and soul. In his latest endeavor, he shares a Beamer family philosophy that's been passed down through the generations about the many facets of aloha.
This rebroadcast of Spectrum Hawaiʻi features woodcrafters, including Mickey Sussman, a luthier from Kauaʻi who has created instruments for Roland Cazimero and guitar great Taj Mahal (both of whom make cameos.)
This documentary pays tribute to a range of composers who flourished between the 1870s and the 1920s. The film explores the poetry and play of Hawaiian lyrics, as well as the places and features of the natural world that inspired songs still loved and listened to today.
In 2024, PBS Hawai‘i will celebrate Nā Mele’s 25th Anniversary with a year long pā‘ina, featuring special programs, artist profiles, behind-the-scenes footage and virtual events on our broadcast and digital
