From hidden-alleyway bicycle tours to the French-Canadian version of Little Italy to its world famous Cirques Festivals to a distiller making gin out of locally sourced botanicals, Montréal both surprised and inspired Samantha in her travels visiting the “City of Saints.” Only to be further awed, Samantha takes an evening walking tour of Old Montréal, where short films are digitally projected on the sides of historic buildings with the corresponding soundtrack being played through one’s smartphone, which all celebrate Montréal’s 375 year history.

Bologna, Italy

 

Join Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking for its first-ever visit to Bologna, the culinary capital of Italy. Host Pete Evans meets Stefano Corvucci, founder of the Culinary Institute of Bologna, and learns why the Po River Valley gives its famed Grana Padano such distinguished flavor. Then, our two chefs join up with Stefano’s colleague Lucia Bezzi to visit the Mercato di Mezzo, a food market that’s been buzzing since the Middle Ages. Stefano and Lucia bring to life iconic regional dishes like lasagne, tortelloni, and tiramisu, using techniques and instincts they’ve inherited and cultivated from family. It’s a meal as rich in flavor and heritage as the medieval brick that covers the city.

MOVEABLE FEAST WITH FINE COOKING
Vercelli, Italy

 

The home of Italy’s lush risotto rice, Vercelli lies in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking pays a visit to bearded brothers Christian and Manuel Costardi, chefs who have perfected their risotto craft all the way down to the rice grain at their restaurant Cinzia da Christian and Manuel. Host Pete Evans takes a trip to the risotto farm with Christian and Manuel to see how the local rice is sourced from hand-flooded fields. Then, the group gets up close with another Piedmont product: hazelnuts. Back at the Costardis’ restaurant, which has been part of their family’s hotel for decades, the feast showcases Christian’s classic tomato risotto and Manuel’s delicate hazelnut ice cream.

Basilicata with Francis Ford Coppola

 

The small Italian region of Basilicata is located in the “in-step” of the Italian boot. Basilicata is the most mountainous region in Italy with nearly 50% of its territory covered by mountains, with the rest of the area nearly fully covered in hills. Although Basilicata has less than 10 miles of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, that coastline is one of its best-kept secrets and the seaside town of Maratea could give anywhere in the Amalfi Coast a run for its money in the beauty department. The most famous site in Basilicata is the sassi (caves) of Matera which were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Florence

 

In Season 2 of Dream of Italy, join Italy travel expert Kathy McCabe as she visits Florence, Venice, Bologna, Basilicata, Campania and Abruzzo. In Basilicata, Kathy is joined by film director Francis Ford Coppola. Kathy explores her Italian roots in her ancestral hometown of Castelvetere sul Calore.

 

Florence
Florence is known for its Renaissance art and architecture. But the city isn’t stuck in the past, it is always evolving. Host Kathy McCabe gets to see the restoration of the Duomo from a unique perspective – a crane! She visits the only Last Supper painted by a woman – a Renaissance nun nonetheless – and she’s how it is being brought to life. Florence is also home to modern street artist Clet Abraham and Kathy joins him for an artistic caper of sorts. There are fresco-making and cooking lessons and a unique, historic boat trip on the Arno River.

Livorno, Italy

 

In the port city of Livorno, host Pete Evans is joined in Italy by two chef-authors with US roots: Bryan Voltaggio, who visits from Maryland, and Pamela Sheldon Johns, who has called Tuscany home for over 20 years. Seasonal, local and traditional flavors have inspired this seaside episode of Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking; first, Pete visits Prosciutto di Parma to learn about this geographically-protected delicacy. Then, he meets up with Bryan and Pamela to tour the city’s Venetian-style canals and browse the 19th-century style Mercato Centrale for local produce. From the regional classic cacciucco, a tomato-based seafood stew, to a flavorful bordatino, a bean and polenta soup, this feast embodies the spirit of Livorno in its unpretentious character and coastal integrity.
