NĀ MELE
Cyril Pahinui and Peter Moon Jr.

NA MELE Cyril Pahinui and Peter Moon Jr.

This special NĀ MELE presentation pairing Cyril Pahinui and Peter Moon Jr. has a special significance, as both are the sons of Hawaiian music icons: slack key guitar legend Gabby “Pops” Pahinui and Peter Moon Sr., a seminal figure in the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s.

Cyril and Peter Moon Jr.’s master-apprentice process is rooted in the “old style” approach to teaching: watch, listen and learn. That was how Cyril learned from his father, and this technique has borne fruit with Peter Moon Jr. as the two of them, along with special guest Jeff Ahoy on steel guitar, perform in a jam session at the PBS Hawai‘i studio.

The Dave Clark Five was actually the first English group to tour America in May of 1964, and thus the first to spearhead rock and roll’s “British invasion” that changed the world. The group’s greatest hits include “Glad All Over,” “Bits and Pieces” and “Over and Over.” This special features archival footage of the band, along with newly filmed interviews with Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg, Dionne Warwick, Sir Ian McKellen and others, all sharing their memories of how the music and the cultural revolution of 1964 changed their lives.

Soundstage:
Blues Summit in Chicago

Forty years ago, a group of Chicago-based blues artists gathered with some of their younger blues brethren from all over the country to pay tribute to the man most responsible for bringing blues from the Mississippi Delta upriver to Chicago: Muddy Waters. Appearing with Muddy that night were Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells and Pinetop Perkins, and, from the next generation, Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles, Johnny Winter and Dr. John and Nick Gravenites – all artists who have now become legends themselves.
