Post-Election 2016 – Our Expectations

Although difficult to imagine, the 2016 Election will be over after Tuesday, Nov. 8. The U.S. Congress, our State Legislature and the County Councils will soon be back in session working on the issues debated and promises made during recent campaigns. All three levels government will be represented on this edition of INSIGHTS.

U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, U.S. Congresswoman-elect Colleen Hanabusa, State Speaker of the House Joe Souki and Senate President Ron Kouchi will discuss how our Congressional team and State leadership plan to work together during 2017 and what they fully expect to accomplish in the coming year.

We’ve also invited Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i County Council members to join Honolulu City Council Chair, Ernie Martin.

Midterm Legislative Update

State lawmakers have passed the halfway point in the 2016 legislative session, marking the key juncture in the session known as “crossover.” This is when surviving House bills cross to the Senate for consideration, and vice versa. INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I presents a Midterm Legislative Update on bills that have advanced and others that were passed over. Subject areas include homelessness, a fuel tax hike, education, vacation rentals and prisons. Hawai‘i Public Radio’s Beth-Ann Kozlovich is scheduled as guest moderator.

Your questions and comments are welcome via phone, email and via Twitter during the Live Broadcast.

Is 100% Renewable Energy Attainable?

The state Legislature set a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. But weʻre currently the most fossil fuel dependent state in the nation, with billions of dollars of the State’s economy being spent each year on imported fuel. While Hawai‘i is on track to meet its current clean energy goal, which mandates that 40% of the islands’ energy comes from renewable resources by 2030, what would it take for Hawai‘i to achieve 100% renewable energy?

How Can We Best Help the Homeless?

Efforts to deal with Oahu’s homeless population, such as moving them out of parks
and off sidewalks, have only shifted them away from businesses, leading to more
sidewalk tents in Kaka‘ako and Kapalama. Now City Council members want the Mayor
to consider using the former Hilo Hattie site on Nimitz Highway as a homeless shelter.
What could the State and counties do to help? How can we best help the homeless?
