INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I
How Cyber-Secure Are You?

INSIGHTS explores cyber-security in this modern age of data. Your new big screen smart TV looks innocent enough. But Wikileaks’ latest raft of documents alleged the CIA had created tools to turn smart TVs into bugging devices. Vizio and Netflix already admitted to tracking customer behavior through TV’s. Our smartphones and computers can be targeted by hackers. But you have more control over these intrusions and criminal acts than you might imagine.

Great Broadway Musical Moments from the Ed Sullivan Show

Great Broadway Musical Moments from the Ed Sullivan Show

From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, The Ed Sullivan Show, based in the heart of New York’s theatre district, presented live special performances by cast members from the most beloved stage musicals of Broadway’s golden age. Not seen for decades since their original broadcasts, these rare selections include performances by legends Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, Gwen Verdon, Dick Van Dyke, Richard Burton and others in songs from classics such as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweet Charity and Camelot. The special is hosted by Shirley Jones.

Virtuosity:
The Cliburn

Every four years, a group of the finest young pianists takes the stage at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. The pressure on these artists is overwhelming, because the stakes are so high: prize money, concert bookings, a recording contract, a career. At the heart of this story is the courage it takes for a 20-year-old to go onstage alone before 2,000 people, and hundreds of thousands more online, and play a unique interpretation of one of the most difficult pieces ever written for the piano. The competition requires not only a transcendent musical ability, but a mental toughness that must sustain the soloist through three straight weeks of performance. The Cliburn becomes as much a test of character as a musical proving ground.

GREAT PERFORMANCES
Billy Elliot: The Musical Live

Based on the popular 2000 film, Billy Elliot: The Musical took London’s West End and Broadway by storm, winning the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical. Featuring a rousing score by Elton John, the story takes place during North East England’s contentious mining strike of 1984 and tells the inspirational story of a young boy’s journey from the boxing ring to the ballet barre, transforming his family and his community.

GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET
Les Contes D’Hoffmann

Tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the role of Hoffman, the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer in Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece. Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley and Christine Rice sing the three heroines – each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy Four Villains. Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score for a Bartlett Sher’s wild, kaleidoscopic production.
