Samson et Dalila

 

Darko Tresnjak’s production is set in 1150 BC, where the mighty Samson fights vigilantly to free the ancient Israelites from their bondage underthe Philistines. The High Priest of Dagon, angry with Samson after he kills the Philistine governor Ambimélech, plots to destroy Samson by utilizing the beauty of his former lover, Dalila. A passionate Samson falls prey to Dalila’s seduction, causing the secret to his superhuman strength, his long hair, to be revealed. After being ambushed by the Philistines, a weakened and vulnerable Samson must face the High Priest of Dagon and perform the ultimate sacrifice to save his people.

Michael Mayer’s new production follows courtesan Violetta Valéry, who knows she will die soon and wishes to leave her professional life for a chance at love. After meeting the charming Alfredo Germont at a party, the two begin a relationship and move to the country in an effort to enjoy their love away from society. A tumultuous visit from Alfredo’s father, the bourgeois Giorgio Germont, casts doubt in Violetta’s heart for the future of their relationship, causing her to abandon their love nest. After seeing Violetta on the arm of a baron, a jealous Alfredo must fight for his love and reunite with her before it is too late. Anita Rachvelishvili hosts.

In 2014, The Cleveland Orchestra staged a unique production of Leoš Janáĉek’s The Cunning Little Vixen that blended traditional opera with technology and animation. OPERA REIMAGINED: ANIMATING THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN follows the journey of this innovative approach to opera from conception to tech rehearsals and, finally, to opening night. Through rehearsal footage, production meetings, and interviews with director Yuval Sharon, Cleveland Orchestra music director Franz Welser-Möst, animators at Walter Robot, and others, the half-hour documentary reveals how the opera comes together piece-by-piece, providing a fascinating view of all the creative elements featured in this unique performance.
