INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI
PTSD and Military Veterans

Military veterans who experience combat trauma are at a higher risk of suicide than others who experience post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Across the country, an average of 20 veterans per day take their own lives. That is more than 7,000 per year. Where can veterans get help? How do friends and loved ones recognize the symptoms? Can the government do more?

Too Big An Ask?

For the past several years, the problems of O‘ahu’s Emergency Medical Services have been widely reported: EMT sick-outs due to 14 and 16 hour days with no relief in sight; and an aging fleet of ambulances needing constant repair. Each day, there are more than a million residents, visitors and military personnel on O‘ahu. EMS has only 20 ambulance units available at any given time. Is that enough? We’ll hear from the head of O‘ahu’s EMS, a doctor who works in Hawai‘i’s busiest ER, and others.

ROADTRIP NATION
Beyond the Dream

This edition follows three 20-something immigrants who were each brought to the U.S. at a young age by their parents. They all have temporary relief from deportation, but not legal status. An immigration policy called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has allowed them to live and work in the U.S. for a two-year period. But without long-term protections, they have a much graver question to ponder: “Will I be able to stay in this country?”
