SAMANTHA BROWN’S PLACES TO LOVE: Oregon RV Trip

Samantha ends this season with an all-American family RV road trip throughout the state of Oregon. From Hood River to Fossil to Bend, Samantha and her family take in the magnificent scenery and explore some of the most intriguing stops along the way. She also learns how to drive an authentic Model T car, and visits a real-working ranch, where she gets to herd Black Angus cattle.

SAMANTHA BROWN’S PLACES TO LOVE
Houston, Texas

When it comes best destination cities in the US, does Houston make your list? Maybe it should. As one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, this city offers something for everyone. Not only that, but it’s really become a melting pot of all sorts of different cultures. Throw in a booming art and food scene, and I think Houston just might be a vacation destination that’s hiding in plain sight.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I
Dubious Distinction

Hawai‘i has the Dubious Distinction of having more visitor drowning deaths than any other place in the country. According to the State Department of Health, Hawai‘i’s visitor drowning rate is 13 times the national average, and 10 times the rate for residents. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the national media, and the military refers to water-surrounded Hawai‘i as the Drowning Capital of the U.S. Why is our visitor drowning rate so high and what can be done about it? INSIGHTS poses the question to people who know how to make everyone safer in our waters.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I
Is Hawai‘i a Dangerous Destination?

Is Hawai‘i a dangerous destination? Some national media outlets think so. The Huffington Post declared “too many tourists are dying in Hawai‘i,” and a Bay Area NBC station included Hawai‘i when it promised “Dangerous Destinations Revealed.” Our visitors are aggressively seeking out the next thrill for a selfie, while our rescue teams put their lives on the line when something goes wrong.

GLOBE TREKKER
Hawai‘i

No other group of islands on earth fascinates the common traveler more than the lush archipelago of volcanic isles positioned so beautifully in the Pacific. With this in mind, Trekker Zoe D’Amato sets out on an adventure to explore Hawai‘i Island, Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I
The Airbnb-ing of Hawai‘i

Short-term vacation rental companies like Airbnb are changing the tourism industry – and quite possibly your neighborhood. Opponents of this phenomenon say illegal or “underground” vacation rentals drive up housing prices and change the character of neighborhoods. Airbnb proponents say it has stabilized Hawai‘i’s housing market. Local data indicates 19 percent of homeowners partner with Airbnb to avoid foreclosure, and 60-65 percent participate so they can afford to stay in their homes. Differing perspectives on this issue will be heard on this INSIGHTS, televised live, and live streamed on pbshawaii.org and Facebook.

A CHEF’S LIFE
Don’t Tom Thumb Your Nose at Me! Part 2

A Chef’s Life is a cooking and documentary series that takes viewers inside the life of Chef Vivian Howard, who, with her husband Ben Knight, opens a fine dining restaurant in her small hometown in Eastern North Carolina. Each episode follows Vivian out of the kitchen and into cornfields, strawberry patches and hog farms as she hunts down the ingredients that inspire her menus. Using a chef’s modern sensibilities, Vivian explores Southern cuisine, past and present – one ingredient at a time. A celebration of true farm-to-table food, the series combines the action and drama of a high-pressure business with the joys and stresses of family life.

Don’t Tom Thumb Your Nose at Me! Part 2
The excitement of the night before turns into heightened emotion and real nerves for Vivian as she faces one challenge after another in the prep kitchen before the SFA luncheon. Wondering at the sanity of this undertaking, she’s glad to have Chef Jason Vincent to lend some street cred to the whole endeavor.
