This film tells the story of music teacher Harry Urata, and his efforts to record, preserve and perpetuate the musical oral histories of Japanese immigrants who worked in Hawai‘i’s sugarcane fields in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through their canefield songs, or holehole bushi, these women sang about their joys and sorrows of trying to start life in a new world.

The Butuyan family moved to the island of O‘ahu from the Philippines in 1969. Five years later, Theo and Elena Butuyan opened Elena’s Restaurant in Waipahu, Central O‘ahu. Our second story is on Honolulu-based artist Bonhui Uy. Born and raised in the Philippines, he came to America in 1965 after graduating as an architectural engineer from Taiwan National Cheng Kung University. His artwork expanded to pieces made mostly with recycled materials such as newspapers, cardboard boxes, bottles and sheetmetals.
