In this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i, find out which schools produced the winning entries for HIKI NŌ’s 2025 Winter Challenge competition with host Jett Jarrett, a sophomore at Kalāheo High School on Oʻahu.
Usually students have weeks to work on projects for HIKI NŌ, and lots of help from our teachers and industry mentors. During this particular HIKI NŌ Challenge, students had just under a week to answer the call and find stories that meet the prompt.
For the 2025 HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i Winter Challenge, the call was for videos based on the prompt “Small Actions, Big Impact.”
HIKI NŌ Challenges are held three times a school year and provide students with the opportunity to review and learn HIKI NŌ production standards, test their skills, and get a taste for what it is like to produce work under professional deadlines.
The students model professional journalists and conduct interviews, capture footage and edit their stories without any hands-on help from teachers or HIKI NŌ’s industry professionals. The winning stories’ scores were based on production and storytelling criteria as well as how they fit the prompt.
