THE FISHER PEOPLE explores the immigration experiences of Vietnamese refugees who fled war in the 1970s and settled along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, turning to shrimp and crab fishing despite language barriers, economic hardship, and threats of violence and segregation. The four-part series traces their journey from chaotic evacuation and temporary refugee camps to building lasting communities in the U.S. Fifty years later, Vietnamese churches, temples and businesses dot the coast – testament to a people who preserved their heritage while finding acceptance in America.
In the aftermath of severe weather and power outages, we are working to restore service to our over-the-air viewers on Kauaʻi. Mahalo for your patience and understanding.
