Illegal short-term rentals have been a problem for years. As visitor numbers grew, more and more tourists were showing up in neighborhoods outside resort areas, prompting an outcry from residents. The city is in favor of a six-month minimum for rentals located in resort areas only with property taxed at higher rates. Some hail the new effort while others pan it.
