On Tuesday, December 17 we had a virtual screening of this documentary that sheds light on a multi-agency effort to protect several of Hawaiʻi’s forest birds threatened with extinction due to the threat of avian diseases carried by invasive mosquitos. A conversation with the filmmaker followed the screening.
When Silence Becomes a Song documents the urgent battle to save the ʻakikiki, the honeycreeper endemic to the island of Kauaʻi. Filmmaker Ella Marcil follows the efforts of conservationists, scientists and videographers as they confront the looming threat of extinction faced by this delicate bird species.
