TOP STORY Students from Wai‘anae High School in West O‘ahu tell the story of Matthew Reyes Jr., an enterprising young pig farmer who helps his parent run Reyes’ Hog Farm in Ma‘ili. Matthew is so dedicated to his family’s business that he sacrifices any semblance of a social life.

The last INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I before primary election day on August 11 focuses on two Neighbor Island races.   First, at 8:00 pm, meet Hawai‘i Island County Council member Dru Kanuha and former councilmember Brenda Ford, candidates in the Democratic Primary for State Senate District 3 (Kailua-Kona to Na‘alehu).

TOP STORY Students from Maui High School in Kahului present an inspiring story about Keizhawn Daquis, a Maui Waena Intermediate School student who was born with spina bifida, a birth defect in which a developing baby’s spinal cord fails to develop properly. As a result Keizhawn needs a wheelchair to get around.

Fred Hemmings has lived life as a waterman, an entrepreneur and a lawmaker – but he says he’s most proud of being a “local boy.” He shares his experience growing up in Honolulu in the ’50s and ’60s surfing alongside Duke Kahanamoku in Waikīkī, and how his time as an amateur surfer led him to a career that championed professional surfing.

One of the most hotly contested races this election season is the Democratic Primary for U.S. House District 1, representing urban Honolulu to Mililani and ‘Ewa Beach.

TOP STORY Students from Kaua‘i High School in Lihue present a personal essay called “The Bigger Picture.” It bemoans how smartphones and other personal electronic devises get in the way of our enjoyment of the natural world around us.

Augie Tulba, known to the world as comedian Augie T, understood the value of hard work from a young age growing up in Kalihi Valley Housing. He started working long before his comedy career, and today still juggles his weekday morning radio program, a day job and comedy gigs. After 26 years performing comedy, he has found it to be a source of healing that has helped him make sense of his childhood, his family and his adult life.

INSIGHTS will host candidates from three races on a special two-hour edition:   –From 8 to 8:30 pm it’s the forum for the Democratic Primary for Senate District 6, where State Senator Roz Baker is being challenged by Terez Amato for the seat that represents West and South Maui.

This compilation show features some of the top stories from the spring quarter of the 2017-2018 school year.
