In episode three, some of the South’s most compelling and influential contemporary creators take us to the places that feed their imaginations: Mississippi author Jesmyn Ward, Georgia screenwriter and series creator Michael Waldron, Arkansas songwriter Justin Moore, Mississippi poet Natasha Trethewey, New Orleans songwriter Tarriona “Tank” Ball and Virginia songwriter Thao Nguyen.

The Owensboro Symphony performs A Night at the Oscars, a concert of memorable music from classic movies such as The Godfather, La La Land and more. The concert also features the world's most recorded piper, Eric Rigler, who's played bagpipes, Uilleann pipes and tin whistle on many movie soundtracks including Braveheart, The Lord of the Rings, Titanic and Road to Perdition.

Six of the South’s most influential creators take us home to the places that define them: author Angie Thomas, singer/songwriters Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, author Michael Twitty, country legend Lyle Lovett, and screenwriter Qui Nguyen.

Improvisational pianist and composer Thelonious Monk is among the 20th century’s most revered jazz luminaries. This film by Alain Gomis, features raw footage from an interview the artist gave to French state television in 1969. It shows Monk in the grip of a violent factory of stereotypes, offering an unfiltered glimpse at the racial indignities some artistic geniuses are asked to endure.
