Election 2020
Honolulu Mayoral Race
INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI

We kicked off our Election 2020 coverage on INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI with the contest for a position that will have no incumbent and a complicated stew of challenges: The Honolulu Mayoral Race. Mayor Kirk Caldwell is terming out, and his successor will face the job of rebuilding the City economy during the COVID-19 pandemic; the unfinished and expensive rail project; and the continuing homeless crisis and lack of affordable housing. Despite the difficulties, there are 15 people who’ve signed up to run for the job.

Candidates who appeared in alphabetical order: businessman and former nonprofit leader Keith Amemiya; former TV executive Rick Blangiardi; former pilot and former State Senator John Carroll; attorney and former U.S. Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa; nonprofit leader and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann; community activist and real estate broker Choon James; Honolulu City Councilmember Kym Marcos Pine; and William “Bud” Stonebraker, a former State Representative.
