The 2026 HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi Winter Challenge: Living Through Change
HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi
On this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi, our host reveals the winning entries of the HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi 2026 Winter Challenge. For this Challenge, the prompt was “LIVING THROUGH CHANGE.”
Usually students have weeks to work on projects for HIKI NŌ and lots of help from teachers and professional industry mentors, but for Challenge competitions, students get only five days to produce their stories.
For the first time, HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi created an Elementary School division due to the impressive submissions from some of HIKI NŌ’s youngest contributors. These contests provide students with the opportunity to review and learn HIKI NŌ production standards, test their skills, and get a taste for what it is like to produce work under professional deadlines as they model professional journalists and conduct interviews, capture footage and edit their stories without any hands-on help from teachers or HIKI NŌ’s industry mentors.
The winning stories were selected based on production value, storytelling criteria and closeness to the prompt.
The showʻs host is Izaya Edmonds, a junior at West Hawaiʻi Explorations Academy on Hawaiʻi Island.
