On this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawaiʻi, our hosts reveal the winning entries of HIKI NŌ’s 2025 Spring Challenge competition.
For the 2025 HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i Spring Challenge, the call was for videos based on the prompt “New Beginnings.”
Usually students have weeks to work on projects for HIKI NŌ, and lots of help from our teachers and industry mentors. During seasonal HIKI NŌ Challenges, students are given five days to answer the call and find stories that meet the prompt.
These contests provide students with the opportunity to review and learn HIKI NŌ production standards, test their skills, and get a taste for what it is like to produce work under professional deadlines as they model professional journalists and conduct interviews, capture footage and edit their stories without any hands-on help from teachers or HIKI NŌ’s industry mentors.
The winning stories’ scores were based on production and storytelling criteria as well as how they fit the prompt.
The show is hosted by Hailey Cañete-Gómez and Riah Sabado, seniors at James Campbell High School on Oʻahu.
