HAWAIIANS: Innocence Betrayed
PBS HAWAIʻI PRESENTS

This episode details the effects of Western contact starting with Capt. James Cook, the arrival of the missionaries, the māhele, which, starting in the 1840s, gave into foreign pressure to create private property forcing many Hawaiians off land they had cultivated for centuries. All of this culminated with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. The program includes rare footage of Queen Lili‘uokalani hosting a party at Washington Place in 1915.
