Part 2 of a 3-part series details the effects on Hawaiʻi of Western contact starting with Capt. James Cook, the arrival of missionaries, the so-called Great Māhele which, starting in the 1840s, allowed foreigners to own property forcing many Hawaiians off land they had cultivated for centuries. This culminated with the overthrow of the monarchy followed by annexation by the United States.
