INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI Election 2020 features candidates in county council races on two islands where incumbents cannot run for re-election due to term limits.

In the Hawaiʻi County Council District 8 race, two men are vying for the seat representing North Kona currently held by Karen Eoff. In a winner-take-all primary, Holeka Goro Inaba faces Craig “Bo” Kahui.  Inaba is a native of Kona and is studying for a doctorate in educational leadership. Kahui is a long-time community activist in Kona who once served on the County Reapportionment Commission.

On Oʻahu, three people are running for the Honolulu City Council District 7 seat held by Joey Manahan, which covers Kalihi to Foster Village. The candidates are: Jacob Aki, who grew up in public housing in Kalihi, graduated from Kamehameha Schools and is chief of staff for Sen. Kalani English of Maui; former journalist Radiant Cordero, who was raised in Kalihi-Kai, graduated from Mid-Pacific Institute and is Chief of Staff for Councilmember Joey Manahan; and former special education teacher Ryan Mandado, who graduated from Farrington High School and is the former chair of the Kalihi-Pālama Neighborhood Board.
