August 8, 2023 is a dark day in Hawaiʻi history: the day wildfires destroyed most of Lahaina, Maui and killed at least 102 people. The tragedies of that day left scars not only on the landscape but in the hearts of residents across the state who, after the initial shock, demanded answers to questions about how and why this happened despite clear warnings years in advance that it was possible. A team from FRONTLINE spent a year investigating the root causes of the fires, the emergency response, tensions built during recovery, how changes to the climate and landscape have made Maui increasingly vulnerable to fire and what the future holds for the town that once was the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom.
