(HONOLULU, HI) – PBS Hawaiʻi will host a LIVE conversation with the top finalists vying to become Honolulu’s 12th police chief.

The special 90-minute episode of Insights on PBS Hawaiʻi, hosted by Yunji de Nies, will allow the public to hear from the final candidates for chief of one of the largest metropolitan police departments in the United States, with more than 2,000 sworn officers and civilian employees and an annual budget of more than $300 million.

While the community is not a formal part of the selection process, they will have the opportunity to direct questions and comments to the finalists during the live, moderated discussion, through email, by phoning in or through Facebook Live.

“PBS Hawai‘i is grateful for the Police Commission’s trust in us to bring this LIVE discussion to the community with fairness and integrity,” said Ron Mizutani, President and CEO, PBS Hawaiʻi. “We understand the responsibility of providing a transparent and safe place for viewers to engage with the finalists, and a neutral and balanced space for the finalists to respond to the community they will serve.”

“We are grateful to PBS Hawaiʻi for hosting this forum,” said Honolulu Police Commission Chairwoman Shannon Alivado. “Insights has a strong reputation as a neutral moderator of issues important to the community. We look forward to this broadcast.”

HPD has been led by Interim Chief Rade Vanic since former HPD chief Susan Ballard’s retirement on June 1, 2021.  The Honolulu Police Commission began working with Consultant PSI Services in January after the completion of a lengthy procurement process. The finalists are expected to be named on May 12, 2022.
