The Butuyan family moved to the island of O‘ahu from the Philippines in 1969. Five years later, Theo and Elena Butuyan opened Elena’s Restaurant in Waipahu, Central O‘ahu. Our second story is on Honolulu-based artist Bonhui Uy. Born and raised in the Philippines, he came to America in 1965 after graduating as an architectural engineer from Taiwan National Cheng Kung University. His artwork expanded to pieces made mostly with recycled materials such as newspapers, cardboard boxes, bottles and sheetmetals.
