In this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i, discover the talent of Hawai‘i’s New Wave of Storytellers and go behind the scenes as they experience the SHOOTS Summit Hawai‘i 2025, a statewide student media conference and contest. The event was coined “Chee for Three!” to commemorate its third anniversary.
The SHOOTS Summit attracted a record of approximately 700 students along with dozens of teachers, chaperones, and volunteers from elementary, middle and high schools from O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island and even Texas.
The event was organized by the teachers of Hawaii Creative Media. HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i provided several professional mentors and staff to conduct educational breakout sessions about journalism, video production and storytelling.
Contest categories at this year’s event included feature news story, music video, animation, commercial and promotional video, short film, silent film, Public Service Announcement, and even a weather report category. Students also tested their skills in still photography, portraits and vlogs.
This special episode is hosted by Natsuki Kuroda, a fifth grader at Waikīkī Elementary School on Oʻahu. She shares some of the award winning work that was produced during the conference.
