PBS HAWAIʻI PRESENTS

This program emphasizes the significance of chants in every aspect of Hawaiian history including the voyages of Polynesians who discovered and settled the Hawaiian islands. The program also describes how these settlers created a thriving, sophisticated society that included ahupua‘a, or land divisions from mauka to makai, complex agricultural systems for growing taro, the rules of kapu describing what was sacred or forbidden and the ingenious creation of fish ponds for food.
